It has come to our attention that there has been a significant amount of confusion regarding which practicum students should sign up for which practicum when and under what conditions. Upon looking at the existing titles of these practica it is clear why there has been (and currently is) confusion.
In an attempt to clarify, it should be noted that:
The Core Practicum course is currently listed as Practicum in Clinical Psychology (CLP 6943). This is the practicum that students are supposed to currently register for when they are doing their initial “core” practica in Child, Med Psych, Neuro Psych, Mental Health, and Rural/Primary Care. While these beginning core practica usually have a major assessment focus, the caseload of therapy cases typically seen during terms where students are registered for core practica are considered under the core practicum registration. Normally, students would not also register for “Advanced Practicum” during this time.
Advanced Practicum (CLP 6947) is currently the practicum that students should register for when they are engaged in seeing therapy/intervention patients, above and beyond that associated with their core practicum and during terms in which they are seeing therapy patients and not registered for core practicum.
The additional current practicum courses (CLP 6945 [Neuropsychology], CLP 6946 [Applied Medical Psychology] and CLP 6948 [Clinical Child]) are truly the “advanced practica” in that they are required practica by the students’ area of specialization.
While the above practicum courses are currently on the books and will be used for registration until further notice, to minimize confusion, we have formally requested a modification of the names of these practica to clarify the differences between these courses.
If approved by the Graduate School the following modifications will take place:
The current Practicum in Clinical Psychology (CLP 6943) will be renamed by adding the word “Core” to the beginning of the title.
The current CLP 6947 titled, “Advanced Practicum” will be changed to reflect the specific nature of this practicum and will be called “Practicum in Intervention”.
The three advanced practica that are required by areas of concentration - Neuropsychology, Applied Medical Psychology and Clinical Child (CLP 6945, CLP 6946, and CLP 6948) - will all be renamed by adding the word “Advanced” to the beginning of the title.
Again, you will be notified when the requested name changes have been approved – In the meantime, please use the course numbers and guidelines that are bolded to guide registration.
Hope this helps.
